Information about the job position of a doctor in Austria

  • Job start: continuously throughout the year

  • Salary:
    • Young doctors: Beginning doctors who are still in the training stage (residents) can expect a salary of approximately from 4,500 euros monthly gross.
    • Experienced doctors (specialists): Doctors with specialization and several years of experience can have a monthly salary in the range of 6,000 to 8,000 euros gross. The salary increases with experience, specialization and position.
    • Heads of department and senior doctors: Senior positions, such as heads of departments or leading physicians, can reach salaries of 8,000 to 15,000 euros monthly gross, depending on the size and importance of the hospital or clinic.
  • Accommodation: often provided by the employer or with a housing allowance

  • Proof of German language proficiency (C1)
  • Your medical education must be recognised by Austrian authorities. This includes submitting copies of your diploma and other relevant documents.
  • Certificates of practical experience, if you have professional experience (e.g. confirmation from an employer).
  • Confirmation of good character and medical practice for the last five years/Confirmation that the Slovak Medical Chamber has no information about the doctor's lack of integrity (Certificate of Good Standing).
  • Current CV in German, which contains detailed information about your education and work experience.
  • Criminal record extract officially translated into German
  • Certificate of medical fitness

    • Experienced doctors (specialists): Doctors with specialization and several years of experience can have a monthly salary in the range of 6,000 to 10,000 euros gross. The salary increases with experience, specialization and position.
    • Heads of department and senior doctors: Senior positions, such as heads of departments or leading physicians, can reach salaries of 10,000 to 20,000 euros monthly gross, depending on the size and importance of the hospital or clinic.
  • Accommodation: often provided by the employer or with a housing allowance

    • Experienced doctors (specialists): Doctors with specialization and several years of experience can have a monthly salary in the range of 10,000 to 15,000 CHF gross. The salary increases with experience, specialization and position.
    • Heads of department and senior doctors: Senior positions, such as heads of departments or leading physicians, can reach salaries of 15,000 to 25,000 CHF monthly gross, depending on the size and importance of the hospital or clinic.
  • Accommodation: often provided by the employer or with a housing allowance

    • Young doctors: Beginning doctors who are still in the training stage (residents) can expect a salary of approximately from 2,500 euros monthly gross (approximately 60,000 CZK).
    • Experienced doctors (specialists): Doctors with specialization and several years of experience can have a monthly salary in the range of 2,500 to 4,000 euros gross (approximately 60,000 to 96,000 CZK). The salary increases with experience, specialization and position.
    • Heads of department and senior doctors: Senior positions, such as heads of departments or leading physicians, can reach salaries of 4,000 to 6,000 euros monthly gross (approximately 96,000 to 144,000 CZK), depending on the size and importance of the hospital or clinic.

    • Experienced doctors (specialists): Doctors with specialization and several years of experience can have a monthly salary in the range of 3,200 to 5,000 euros gross. The salary increases with experience, specialization and position.
    • Heads of department and senior doctors: Senior positions, such as heads of departments or leading physicians, have salaries from 5,000 euros monthly gross, depending on the size and importance of the hospital or clinic.
